Why This Ticket Matters

The 1888 Republican National Convention opened in Chicago on June 19 and ultimately selected Benjamin Harrison of Indiana as its presidential nominee.

Harrison entered the convention behind several better-known contenders but gained strength as the balloting continued, securing the nomination on the eighth ballot. He went on to defeat incumbent President Grover Cleveland in the Electoral College, becoming the 23rd president of the United States.

This ticket survives from the opening day of the convention that launched Harrison’s successful campaign and shaped one of the closest presidential elections of the nineteenth century.
